Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence at the funeral of fellow Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota and his brother has stirred widespread debate online, with many questioning why the Portugal national team captain failed to attend such a high-profile and emotional farewell.

The funeral, held just two days after the tragic accident in Gondomar, Portugal, drew hundreds of mourners, including football stars, club officials, and family members.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and head coach Arne Slot led Jota’s club teammates in paying their respects.

Portugal national team players like Bruno Fernandes and Ruben Dias were also present.

Jota’s best friend, Ruben Neves, flew in overnight from the U.S. after featuring for Al Hilal in the Club World Cup, just to attend the service.

But the glaring absence of Ronaldo, one of the most iconic footballers in the world and a long-time teammate of Jota, left many fans disappointed. Many expected him to be there, not just as a friend, but as a leader of the national team.

“A lot of people felt he should have come because of his role as team leader and because he and Jota were teammates,” one online user posted, echoing the frustration seen across social media.

According to A BOLA, a Portuguese sports newspaper, Ronaldo intentionally stayed away to avoid drawing media attention that might have overshadowed the solemnity of the event. “Because he is such a big star, his presence might have caused a lot of distraction at a time when the family needed privacy and peace,” the outlet reported.

Even though he did not attend, Ronaldo privately reached out to Jota’s wife, Rute, and his parents.

He conveyed his condolences and assured them of his support.

Some fans viewed the gesture as kind and respectful, but others felt a personal appearance would have carried greater meaning.

The funeral was a heartbreaking affair.

Fans, family, and players were seen in tears as they said goodbye to Jota and his brother.

The football world continues to mourn the loss of two lives taken too soon.
