Naomi Gitau’s Ravenwood escape in Tigoni

Just a few kilometres from the hustle and bustle of Nairobi City lies Ravenwood Escapes, a hidden gem nestled amidst 100 acres of rolling, lush tea plantations. It is a serene escape where the air is infused with the fresh aroma of tea leaves, and the melodic chirping of birds creates a soothing symphony.

This is more than just a getaway—it's your home away from home, where peace and tranquillity reign supreme. Here, you can unwind and immerse yourself in the breathtaking landscapes and natural beauty that Tigoni has to offer.

Naomi Gitau, a dynamic entrepreneur with a deep passion for travel, honed her marketing skills at Daystar University. Married and a mother of one, she now channels her love for adventure into managing a family staycation business nestled in the serene suburbs of Tigoni.

Inspired by her desire to share the unique experience of tea growing, Naomi embarked on this venture to offer guests a tranquil retreat steeped in the rich culture and beauty of the Tigoni region's tea plantations.

The two homes, named Taboga and Africana, are nestled right in the heart of the tea farm, offering a serene escape surrounded by nature.

Upon arrival, the Art of Living crew and I were warmly welcomed by Naomi, a millennial with a radiant smile who manages these beautiful homes.

While primarily private, their farm is now shared with the public, allowing guests to experience its beauty firsthand.

When Naomi lost her job, she saw an opportunity and convinced her father to build the houses, which would not only provide them with extra income but also give her a new role. Drawing from her previous experience, Naomi recognized the profitability of staycations and Airbnb rentals. Her father believed in her vision, and to this day, their decision has proven to be a success.

Each stay is set within a charming 3-bedroom house, comfortably accommodating up to 8 guests and surrounded by lush tea fields—a perfect escape for families and friends seeking peace and serenity. The first house boasts expansive windows that frame stunning views of the farm, flooding the space with fresh, airy tranquillity. It's more than just a home; it's a living art piece, exuding magic and calm.

Inside, authentic and rustic light fixtures add character to the space, while simple yet elegant black curtains create a striking contrast against the black-and-white patterned cushions, infusing the room with personality and charm.

The green velvet seat invites you to sink into its cosy, luxurious embrace, while the warm clay floor beneath your feet offers comfort, no matter the weather. A stunning Persian blue carpet adds a touch of elegance to the space.

The living room

The modern kitchen is a masterpiece, featuring state-of-the-art appliances, gleaming marble surfaces, and meticulously crafted cabinetry.

As we ascended the stairs, the beauty of the rooms took our breath away. The expansive windows offered fantastic views of the sprawling tea farm, letting in light and serenity. A standout feature in the ensuite room is the striking wooden beam that adds rustic charm. The beds, adorned with gorgeous black-and-white bedding, further enhance the room's timeless elegance.

Moving to the next house, the burnt orange velvet sofas exude the same cosy luxury, and the large windows continue to showcase the farm's picturesque landscape, making it feel like a slice of paradise. The white walls serve as a perfect canvas, highlighting the home's design.

"I had these sofas made by a local artisan," Naomi proudly shared. "All our furniture was crafted by local talents. I believe in supporting our artisans because they are incredibly gifted. These pieces are world-class, don’t you agree?" she quipped with a smile.

The light fixtures are nothing short of spectacular, infusing the space with character and warmth.

The traditional fireplace is exactly what you need to ward off the chill, creating a cozy haven during colder weather.

When I asked Naomi how she manages the family property, she smiled and shared that she’s learned so much from her father, noting that her guests are her top priority. The decision to build these two houses has proven to be a game-changer, adding tremendous value to their tea farm. Now, guests not only enjoy a peaceful retreat but also have the opportunity to learn about tea farming, explore houseplants, and reconnect with nature.

"Tea farming can be challenging, especially with the few factories around," Naomi explained. "With these homes, we’re learning to reinvent ourselves, which is why we’ve ventured into the hospitality business while continuing our tea farming." It’s a brilliant example of innovation, particularly for those with coffee or tea farms looking to diversify.
