Charge sheet reveals Nakuru panga-wielding protester is Kenyan, not Ugandan

Police might have lied about the nationality of a suspected foreigner, who was captured confronting police officers armed with a panga during a protest in Nakuru County.

Initially, the police in Nakuru had said that the suspect, Hassan Mti Mkavu, was a Ugandan.

Mkavu was arraigned before Principal Magistrate Kipkurui Kibelion on Wednesday, but the charge sheet, seen by The Standard, revealed that he was a Kenyan.

He faces four counts of creating disturbance in a manner that causes breach of the peace, participating in an unlawful demonstration, being armed in public, and willingly obstructing police officers in the execution of their duties.

On June 11, 2025, at around 1000hrs at London area in Nakuru West Sub-County, created disturbance in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by shouting aggressively and waving a panga at Police Officers Charles Francis and CPL Kambo,” read the charge sheet.

It is also alleged that Mkavu participated in an unlawful public demonstration alongside others without notifying the regulating officer as required by law, thereby disrupting public order and traffic flow.

He was also accused of being armed with a panga, an offensive weapon without lawful authority.

Mkavu alleged that while armed, he obstructed two officers, Francis and Kambo, while in the due execution of their work.

 He denied the charges.

The court released him on a bond of Sh100,000 with surety in a similar amount or alternative cash bail of Sh50,000.

The case will be mentioned on July 1.
