A boda boda rider in Nakuru is fearing for his safety after identifying two of his attackers as police officers stationed at the very police station where he went to report the crime.
Daniel Ng’ang’a says he was attacked on Friday night last week after being lured by a man in civilian clothes posing as a customer.
The client had requested a ride from Nakuru town to Milimani to pick up luggage and return to the central business district.
Upon arrival at the Milimani location, Ng’ang’a says things quickly took a dark turn.
“Huyu mwenye nimebeba alininyonga mambo ikageuka. Sasa kuninyonga mwingine akatokea kwa kichaka akiwa na panga. Kuna boma iko hapo yenye haijajengwa. Walikuwa wamejificha hapo ndani,” Ng’ang’a said in an interview with NTV, adding that one of the assailants even gave the order for his execution, but he pleaded for his life.
The gang of three tied him up and made away with his motorcycle, mobile phone, and the earnings he had made that night.
“Wakati nanyongwa hivi mimi niliangalia huyo mzee hivi juu aliniambia nipee namba yako ya simu nikuwekee pesa. Wakati nilienda kumwambia, mwenye nilikuwa nimebeba akanipiga ngeta akaanza kuninyonga. Nikakaa tu nikiangalia huyu mzee nikamsoma kabisa mpaka kwa macho,” he added.
Ng’ang’a managed to free himself and reported the incident at the Milimani Police Post, where he was advised to proceed to the Nakuru Central Police Station.
However, what awaited him there left him in shock.
He claims that two of the three attackers were right there, now dressed in police uniform.
“Nikakuja nikaelezea watu kadhaa wa boda, wale tunabebanga nao usiku. Nikawaambia nimeshtuka kwenda kuona wenye waliniibia pikipiki ni polisi. Sasa mimi kufika hapo (kwa OCS) nikaingia kwa direct hakutaka kuniona akaniambia wewe nilikwambia kesi yako iko Kaptembwa,” he recounted.
Nakuru Police Commander Michael Mwaura responded to the claims, promising investigations and protection for the complainant.
“If, during the course of investigation, it is established that any member of the service has been involved, an internal disciplinary mechanism will be taken. At the same time, he’ll face the full force of the law. And for the case of the security of the complainant, let me take this opportunity to assure him that his security will be guaranteed 24/7,” the police commander said.
The incident comes amid growing concerns about police conduct, as investigations into the controversial death of protester Albert Ojwang continue.
