Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the torching of Magunas Supermarket during the recent Saba Saba protests.

According to a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) posted on their official X platform, the arrests were made through a joint operation by police officers in Meru County.

The DCI revealed that Ian Mugambi, Abdulatif Murithi, and Teddy Kaimenyi were captured on CCTV cameras looting and setting fire to Magunas Supermarket. The same footage also showed them breaking into and stealing from other nearby businesses, including Seven Eleven Lounge and Selelite Supermarket.

During the arrest operation, police recovered a dark green motorcycle, registration number KMGN 839F, which was allegedly used by the suspects during the criminal acts.

"The suspects are now in custody and are being processed as they await to be taken to court," said the DCI, adding that investigations are ongoing to track down more individuals involved in the incident.

The arrests come in the wake of the July 7th Saba Saba demonstrations, where thousands of young Kenyans marched in protest, demanding better governance, transparency, and accountability from the government.

While the protests began peacefully, some areas witnessed chaos as criminal gangs infiltrated the crowds, looting and destroying property.

Many businesses were forced to shut down for safety, while others suffered significant losses. Magunas Supermarket was among the worst hit, having been completely burned down.

Police have urged members of the public to share any information that could aid in the identification and arrest of other suspects.
