Nairobi waitress accused of draining Sh215,000 from man's M-Pesa after wild night out

A Nairobi waitress has been accused of digitally siphoning Sh215,000 from a male reveller following a night of drinks, flirtation, and alleged betrayal in Tassia, Embakasi.

Agnes Mueni Angina appeared at the Makadara Law Courts, where she was charged with theft, contrary to Section 268(1)(a) as read with Section 275 of the Penal Code.

The prosecution claims she unlawfully transferred the money from the M-Pesa account of Fredrick Ochieng, popularly known as Obama, after a consensual rendezvous on the night of May 17.

Court documents reveal that Angina had previously fallen out with Ochieng over claims he had ignored her in favour of another woman. But on the fateful night, the pair rekindled their acquaintance at a local club, where Ochieng allegedly invited her and a friend for drinks.

The evening escalated into a mutual agreement to spend the night together at a nearby lodging, with Ochieng reportedly offering Sh5,000 as a token.

However, what was expected to be a cordial close to the evening took an unexpected twist.

According to the prosecution, a heavily intoxicated Ochieng handed Angina his mobile phone to facilitate the payment. Instead of keying in the agreed amount, she allegedly altered the figure and discreetly transferred Sh100,000 to her personal M-Pesa account.

Investigators say Ochieng, unaware of the manipulation, fell asleep. By the time he woke up, a staggering Sh215,000 had vanished from his account.

Alarmed, he reported the matter to the authorities, sparking investigations that eventually led to Angina’s arrest. The incident has since stirred heated debate on digital vulnerability in intimate settings, especially within Nairobi’s expanding nightlife scene.

Appearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Joseph Karanja, Angina denied the charges and was released on a bond of Sh100,000 or an alternative cash bail of Sh70,000. The case is scheduled for mention on 28 August, when pre-trial proceedings and hearing dates will be set.
