Briefly introduce yourself and the journey to the USA
I was born and raised in Nyamira County. I am the seventh of eight children, and my upbringing was challenging, much like that of many Kenyans. I attended Ogango Primary School and later proceeded to Menyenya Secondary School. Following secondary school, my uncle, Dr. Andrew Nyabonga, facilitated my relocation to the USA for college. I enrolled at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where I participated in track and cross-country events. After completing college, I settled in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where I have resided for 23 years and counting.
Give us a glimpse of the cultural differences between USA and Kenya
USA is a melting pot of cultures, with influences from around the world. American culture values individualism and personal freedom, often celebrating diversity through various cultural festivals and events. While Kenya is home to 42 tribes each with unique languages , traditions and customs , cultural is often communal with a strong emphasis on family and community ties!
These differences illustrate the unique characteristics of each country, shaped by their history, culture, and societal values.
You have done immense contributions to the communities in the USA including establishing and coaching football clubs and promoting social cohesion, how has this propelled your success in this foreign country?
Yes, my mantra is that you should always do what your heart desires, irrespective of where you are. When you decide to do something, do so wholeheartedly and that helping the communities we come from is very important.
You were elected as a member at City Council of Eau Claire in Wisconsin… What does the post entail and what is the council all about?
I was elected in 2022 and I am now running for re-election. Eau Claire has one of the few city governments in Wisconsin without a Mayor, so the city council body, in conjunction with the city manager, runs the city. From budget, allocating funds for Road construction and several city projects.
How was it possible that an immigrant like you was elected to a political office in USA?
I was able to be elected because I’m extensively involved in this community, particularly in terms of fostering collaboration between law enforcement and the community, volunteering at various organisations, such as those supporting homeless individuals, and teaching young people sports like soccer, running, and basketball, as well as engaging in political activities, including door-to-door canvassing for candidates who share my values.
What is your plan after the expiry of the stipulated term of your office?
My plans subsequent to the expiration of my term on April 15, 2025, include seeking re-election, as I am currently engaged in campaigning for the same.
In your view, how is Trump policy on immigration going to change the status of immigrants especially Kenyans in USA and how is this affecting you?
Tumps policies could affect immigrants in several fronts;
Public Charge Rule: The Trump administration expanded the "public charge" rule, making it more difficult for immigrants to obtain green cards if they were deemed likely to rely on public benefits. This could affect Kenyan immigrants applying for residency.
DACA and Temporary Protected Status (TPS): While DACA primarily affected individuals from Central America, any changes to TPS policies could impact Kenyans if they were to be designated for protection due to conditions in their home country.
Merit-Based Immigration: The Trump administration emphasised a shift towards a merit-based immigration system, prioritising skilled workers. This could affect the types of visas available to Kenyan immigrants, especially those seeking opportunities in the USA.
