Drake has sparked legal drama with Universal Music Group (UMG), filing a lawsuit over the release of Kendrick Lamar's scathing diss track Not Like Us.
The Canadian rapper, who has been at the centre of several lyrical feuds in the past, claims that Universal intentionally allowed the song's release to tarnish his image as a paedophile.
According to BBC, Drake filed the lawsuit accusing the record label of defamation after it allowed the publication of the song.
Drake’s lawsuit claimed by the actions of the record label, a false and malicious narrative had been spread.
The lawsuit accuses UMG of failing to vet the track’s lyrics, which Drake alleges unfairly targeted him.
Universal in response to the suit, dismissed the claims as “illogical.”
The record label which has been the rapper’s label said, "Not only are these claims untrue, but the notion that we would seek to harm the reputation of any artist, let alone Drake, is illogical."
"Throughout his career, Drake has intentionally and successfully used UMG to distribute his music and poetry to engage in conventionally outrageous back-and-forth 'rap battles' to express his feelings about other artists," Universal noted in their response.
It further noted that Drake was seeking to “weaponise the legal process to silence an artist's creative expression and to seek damages from Universal for distributing that artist's music.”
Universal emphasised they had not harmed Drake’s career but had massively invested in the rapper’s music, which in turn helped him achieve historic commercial and personal financial success.
The statement by Universal added that they have not engaged in defamation against any individual.
