The Gengetone wave is undeniably back in full force.
Just a week after Ethic's triumphant return to the music scene, another cornerstone of the genre, Ochungulo Family, has dropped a new track after a three-year hiatus.
Their latest offering, "Zero Distance," is a nostalgic trip back to the golden era of Gengetone, circa 2019.
The song, with its signature blend of witty lyrics, has already captured the attention of fans, rapidly climbing the trending charts on YouTube.
Barely hours since its release, "Zero Distance" has amassed an impressive 91,000 views. This shows that fans had eagerly awaited the group's comeback.
Ochungulo made of Nelly the Goon, Dmore and Benzema have always had a different approach in music.
Leaning heavily on the memorability of onomatopoeia over minimalist beats with, the group tell vivid stories in easy going way that will have you swaying along all through to the end.
Their song, "Kaa na mama yako" pushed them to the national spotlight after they sampled a voice from a politician's speech to create one of the catchiest, most dismissive and sleaziest of hooks.
This comes at a time when Arbantone artistes have been throwing jabs at Gengetone artistes for allegedly being old and washed out as they all threw in the towel and gave up.
True to that fact, many Gengetone groups for a couple of months gave Kenya its own sound, But the all disspeared into oblivion as quietly and quickly as they had come.
This year we have seen two of the groups make a comeback, but according to Peter miracle Baby of the famed sailors gang, he announced that they are never getting back together.
This resurgence of Gengetone, spearheaded by these iconic acts, is undoubtedly a welcome development for Kenyan music lovers and will give Arbantone music a run for its money.
