Kenyan country gospel artiste SK Ruri has released a new song titled 'Zakayo'.
The inspiration for 'Zakayo' struck Ruri during a family breakfast. "A melody came to me, like a story waiting to be told," he recalls.
He quickly recorded it on his daughter's phone, initially titling it 'Story of a Man'. Later that evening, the melody evolved into "The Story of a Short Man," leading him to delve into the biblical account of Zacchaeus in Luke 19:1-10. Within minutes, the song was fully composed.
While inspired by Zacchaeus, Ruri emphasises that the song's message is open to interpretation. "I'm simply a messenger delivering a message whose time has come," he explains.
'Zakayo' addresses societal issues like corruption and exploitation, serving as a wake-up call for individuals and leaders to reform their ways.
Ruri's music is known for its unique blend of humour and profound messages. For the 'Zakayo' music video, he collaborated with comedian Mbilimbili, following a previous collaboration with Morey Wakibiru.
"A cheerful heart is good medicine," Ruri explains, citing Proverbs 17:22. He believes laughter is crucial for Kenyans to navigate challenging times.
Ruri's previous song, 'Thutha wa Maundu', explored the emptiness that often accompanies the pursuit of worldly gains. Both songs, while distinct in their themes, deliver powerful messages through relatable storytelling and a touch of humor.
Beyond entertainment, Ruri advocates for social justice. Citing Proverbs 31:8-9, he emphasises the importance of defending the rights of the poor and marginalised. For Ruri, true gospel music reflects the mission of Christ – to challenge injustice and bring hope.
'Zakayo' is more than just a song; it's a call to action, a source of healing through laughter, and a profound reflection on life's deeper truths,” he says.
