Chef Maliha Mohamed, a self-taught culinary expert from Mombasa, has achieved remarkable feats in the culinary world. Notably, she set a Guinness World Record in 2019 for the longest cooking marathon by an individual.
She prepared over 400 dishes, including traditional Swahili and international cuisines, for over 75 hours.
In November 2023, she attempted to surpass her own record by cooking for 150 hours. However, she was disqualified due to a technicality during her rest break, as per Guinness World Records guidelines.
Despite her significant contributions to promoting Kenyan cuisine and culture on the global stage, Chef Maliha has expressed frustration over the lack of support from the Kenyan government. She feels that her achievements have not been adequately recognised or supported, leading to feelings of neglect.
"I, Maliha Mohamed, a proud Kenyan chef, broke the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon—twice. I put my heart, sweat, and endless hours into making history, not just for myself, but for Kenya. But instead of being recognised and celebrated in my own country, I have been met with silence,” she said.
She also mentioned that other countries honour their record-setters, but in Kenya, everyone gave her a wide berth.
“I have waited in vain for acknowledgment from my county and government. Why is Kenyan talent only celebrated after the world recognises it?”
Maliha further called on all Kenyans to help her amplify her voice to the relevant people.
“Today, I am calling on President William Ruto, First Lady Rachel Ruto, CS Ababu Namwamba (Sports & Arts), and Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir (Mombasa County)—will you recognise me? Will you support Kenyan talent?” she posed.
