One of Kenya’s pioneer Genge music groups, P-Unit, held their 20th-anniversary concert at the Mass House in Ngong Racecourse on Saturday.

The Kenyan hip-hop group began in 2003 and dominated the country’s music industry at the time. The group consists of legendary musicians Frasha, Gabu, and Bon-Eye.

Back in the day, veteran musicians Frasha and Bon-Eye attended the same school and started making music together. They were later joined by Gabu, who had previously been in another group known as Raptas in 2006.

P-Unit stands for Professional Genge Music Unit, shortened to Pro-Genge Unit. Genge means masses, and according to the trio, they were making music for the people.

The group worked with renowned producer Eric Musyoka, popularly known as Dr Dre, who produced their music. Musyoka later started Decimal Records and signed P-Unit as his first artistes.

They have released several hit songs that entertained Kenyans both then and now. Some of these include Kare, Hapa Kule, Si Lazima, Weka Weka, Juu Tu Sana, Una, Gentleman, You Guy, and many others.

They have two acclaimed albums: Wagenge Hao, released in 2010, and Wagenge Hao Tena, released in 2014. These albums were hugely popular and played in most events and clubs. In fact, their song Kare remained number one on radio stations across Africa for a month.

P-Unit has been nominated for the MTV Africa Awards twice and has won over ten awards over the years, including Best Group in Africa and Best Dancehall Song in Africa at the Channel O Africa Music Video Awards.
