Ruto jubilantly joins youth in singing 'Kasongo' during Lang'ata rally

In a vibrant display of humour and charisma, President William Ruto turned the tables on his critics by fully embracing his latest nickname, "Kasongo."

Speaking at a charged public rally in Lang'ata on Thursday, March 13, Ruto playfully questioned why Kenyans seem to have a knack for giving him new monikers at every turn.

With a smile, he listed the journey of nicknames he has earned, from "Hustler" to "Survivor," then "Zakayo," and now "Kasongo."

“Sasa niwaulize nyinyi si nyinyi mtanuia na majina… Mlianza huko mkasema hustler, halafu mkasema survivor, sasa mkaenda ingine Zakayo, sasa naskia mmefika Kasongo, sasa hii majina mtaongeza… Bado mtaongeza ingine ama hiyo imetosha?” he quipped, sending the crowd into fits of laughter.

Without hesitation, Ruto broke into the popular 1980 hit song Kasongo by Orchestra Super Mazembe, much to the excitement of the youthful crowd, who eagerly joined him in singing along.

This lighthearted moment showcased Ruto’s ability to flip criticism into humour, effectively disarming his critics.

The head of state, who was on a three-day tour of Nairobi County, appeared unfazed by the new nickname that his opponents have been using to ridicule him.

Earlier, while launching a Jitume Lab at the PC Kinyanjui Technical Training Institute in Dagoretti, Ruto cleverly incorporated the nickname into his speech, asking, “Iko na kasoro ama iko na Kasongo?” This witty remark further cemented his mastery in turning negative narratives into moments of laughter and unity.

Interestingly, netizens have also dubbed him "El Chapo" after he pledged to deliver a machine that can produce one million chapatis a day.
