Ndura Waruinge: I walked away from Mungiki after Kibaki's victory

Former Mungiki leader-turned-preacher Apostle Ndura Waruinge has vehemently denied ever spending 'blood money' during his time in the outlawed sect.

Waruinge, who led the feared Mungiki sect before finding salvation in 2006, maintained that the money he handled was purely from legitimate businesses controlled by the group.

He dismissed claims that Mungiki extorted money through threats and violence, branding the allegations as baseless propaganda.

"This idea that we threatened people to bring us money is a lie. We were given money to invest and expected to return profits. I never shed blood for money," Waruinge stated firmly in a gripping and unapologetic interview on the Iko Nini Podcast.

When host Mwafreeka pressed him on whether he continued using 'blood money' after his conversion to Christianity, Waruinge rebranded it as ‘tongue money', implying it was earned through persuasion, not violence.

Waruinge revealed that he abandoned Mungiki after the Agikuyu community rose to political power with the election of former President Mwai Kibaki.

"I saw no need to stay in Mungiki. Our goal was to have a Kikuyu president, and we achieved that. Maina Njenga and others refused to leave, but I did," he explained.

The former sect leader made shocking revelations about the 2007/2008 post-election violence, denying any involvement while accusing prominent Kenyan lawyers of manipulating the International Criminal Court (ICC) process for personal gain.

Waruinge alleged that ICC witnesses who testified against key suspects were relocated to Botswana but later returned to Namanga after inconsistencies in their testimonies emerged.

"The foreigners flew them to Botswana but later returned them by road when they realised their stories didn’t add up. Some even called us asking for fare," Waruinge disclosed.

He also accused a prominent Kenyan lawyer of extorting Sh10 billion from former President Uhuru Kenyatta in exchange for protecting him from ICC prosecution.

Waruinge sensationally claimed that President William Ruto’s government is unstable due to Uhuru Kenyatta's secret influence and that Raila Odinga's recent cooperation with the government was also engineered by Uhuru.

"Everything happening in Ruto’s government is Uhuru’s doing. Even Raila’s handshake with Ruto was planned by Uhuru," he alleged.

When asked whether Mungiki accepted members from other tribes, Waruinge admitted that while the sect was predominantly Kikuyu, recruits from other tribes like the Embu and Kamba were allowed to join, albeit with limited privileges.

"If Mungiki had ten levels, non-Kikuyu recruits could only reach level two. The core leadership was reserved for Kikuyus," he revealed.
