Mic check: How MC Jackton turned talent into a thriving career

Who is Jackton?

I’m a professional event host and communications expert with a background in media and public relations. Whether on stage, behind the mic, or strategising behind the scenes, I’m passionate about creating meaningful impact and leaving a lasting impression at both corporate and social events.

Where and what did you study at university?

I studied Broadcast Journalism at the Multimedia University of Kenya, with a focus on TV Production.

Your favourite and least favourite unit?

I loved Media Law and Ethics. That unit helped me understand the responsibility that comes with storytelling and the power of thoughtful, accurate communication.

My least favourite unit was Kiswahili for Communication. While I deeply appreciate the language, I found it challenging to adapt to its formal structure and the academic depth it required.

Best and worst lecturers?

My best lecturer was Laban Frezier. He had a remarkable way of preparing students for the realities of the media industry.

To be honest, I wouldn’t say I had a “worst” lecturer. I approached every class with a willingness to learn something new, regardless of the teaching style.

Are you currently doing what you studied in university?

Yes, to a larger extent. The foundation I got in media and communication directly impacts what I do now. It continues to shape how I communicate, plan and engage audiences.

How was campus life in general?

Campus life was exciting and eye-opening. It wasn’t always easy but it helped shape my confidence and ability to work with others. I came out of it with more than just a degree. I came out with life skills.

How did you make money while on campus?

I monetised my passion by hosting student-centred events—everything from themed entertainment nights to beauty pageants. These gigs helped me build confidence and make meaningful connections.

How was dating life on campus?

Let just say my campus dating life had all the drama of a good Netflix series; thrilling, confusing, sometimes painful but never boring.

Thoughts on campus relationships?

Campus relations are very sweet especially when HELB hits the account.

Where did you hang out on weekends?

Ngong Hills was my go-to spot for the views. I also enjoyed biking with the boys at Oloolua Nature Trail in Karen.

How did you spend your free time?

I spent most of my free time at the University’s Radio station, MMU Radio. Either on air or just recording voice overs for different projects.

Classmates you’ll never forget?

Grahamme, Hiram, Faizah, Morris, Joshua, Rodgers, Mumbi, Brian Mutai, Miranda, Kelvin Nyakundi, Linda, Joan, Mogunde, Iyan, Simiyu, Noor, Sarange, Koko and Edith.

How did you get into MCing?

Event hosting found me on campus. I hosted an event for the drama club, and the audience loved it. That moment was a turning point—the more I did it, the more I realised this was my lane. The audience feedback kept me going.

What challenges have you faced while in your Mc gigs so far?

Plenty. Events starting late, poor sound systems, unpredictable crowds—and yes, I’ve MCed through power blackouts! (Laughs.) But each challenge has strengthened my adaptability, composure, and ability to think on my feet.

What have you learnt tips in the Mc world you would like to share?

I have learnt that talent opens doors but consistency keeps them open. Every event, big or small deserves the same level of energy, preparation and professionalism. Showing up on time is non-negotiable as well. The more consistent and professional you are, the more you are trusted, referred and remembered.

What milestones have you achieved in your career so far?

One key milestone was successfully transitioning from campus and social events into the corporate world. Hosting high-level events for respected brands and organisations has validated my craft and pushed me to raise my game. Another key milestone has been building a solid personal brand as a reliable, trustworthy and engaging MC.

What does the future look like, and what should we expect from Jackton?

The future looks incredibly promising. I’m not just aiming to host events—I’m building a brand that resonates across borders. My goal is to expand my visibility across Africa and eventually onto global platforms.

Any final words for young people keen on pursuing MC gigs?

Start small, show up fully, and always be ahead of time. While you’re at it, be your biggest cheerleader.

Your voice can open doors, but it’s your professionalism and discipline that will keep them open.

The stage is yours—own it with purpose.
