Love Island USA contestant Sean Reifel was the first islander dumped from Season 8, exiting in Episode 5 after a recoupling that left him single.

During the twist, bombshell Corbin Mimis picked first and coupled up with Kenzie Annis, while the remaining islanders opted elsewhere, leaving Reifel without a partner and vulnerable to elimination.

His exit came after a pre-show controversy in his hometown of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where his decision to resign from the police force after less than a year to join the reality series drew public criticism from city officials.

Mayor J. William Reynolds questioned the move, saying he was disappointed that participation in a reality show had taken priority over policing duties.

"I never thought I'd see the day in America where reality show participation wins out over being a police officer," Reynolds said. adding, "our police department spent a lot of time training, and we paid thousands of taxpayer dollars to send him to the police academy."

Bethlehem Police Chief Michelle Kott also expressed regret at losing another officer, while acknowledging Reifel’s personal choice.

"I would be less than candid if I didn't acknowledge my disappointment in losing another police officer," Kott said.

Reifel’s family pushed back against the criticism on social media, arguing that claims about taxpayer losses were overstated.

His sister, Brice Marie, said the situation could have been used to highlight the city positively through his television exposure rather than criticism.

His mother, Beth Reifel Bow, also disputed parts of the officials’ statements, saying her son had prior law enforcement experience before joining the Bethlehem Police Department.

She said she was proud of his decision to appear on the show, describing it as a bold step to pursue love in the public eye.

Reifel was sworn into the department in August 2025.

Before entering the villa, he described policing as a way to positively impact lives.

His run on the show lasted five episodes, but his decision to leave law enforcement for reality television had already sparked debate well before his elimination.
