Jamaican reggae superstar, Sanchez cancels Nairobi performance

Jamaican reggae singer Sanchez has cancelled his planned performances in Nairobi, which were set for September 2 and 3, 2026, at the KONQA event venue.

The announcement disappointed many Kenyan reggae lovers who had been preparing to watch the celebrated singer perform live.

Sanchez had been expected to bring his smooth lovers-rock sound, romantic songs and gospel-inspired music to the Kenyan capital.

However, details on the reason for the cancellation, possible refunds and a new performance date had not been clearly communicated at the time of the announcement.

The cancellation is a setback for fans who had hoped to sing along to some of the singer’s best-known songs, including Loneliness, Frenzy, Amazing Grace, Never Dis Di Man and Fall in Love.

Sanchez is known for emotional live performances that often turn crowds into a choir, especially when he performs love songs and reggae versions of international hits.

Born Kevin Anthony Jackson on November 30, 1964, in Kingston, Jamaica, Sanchez began singing at a young age in his church choir.

His early church experience helped build the powerful, sweet and soulful voice that later made him one of reggae’s most recognisable singers.

He later became involved with the Rambo Sound System before focusing fully on recording music.

His breakthrough came in the late 1980s. In 1987, he released Lady in Red, followed by the major 1988 hit Loneliness, produced by Winston Riley.

The song made Sanchez a household name in Jamaica and opened doors for bigger performances, including Reggae Sunsplash.

That same year, he received awards for Best New Artist, Best Up-and-Coming Singer and Singer of the Year.

Over more than three decades, Sanchez has built a global fan base through reggae, dancehall, R&B and gospel influences.

He is especially respected for turning popular songs into reggae versions, including his successful cover of Tracy Chapman’s Baby Can I Hold You.

His albums include Number One, Tell It Like It Is, Praise Him and True Identity.

For now, Nairobi fans will have to wait for an official update from the organisers and Sanchez’s team on whether the concerts will be rescheduled.
