Young environmental champions took center stage on Saturday as organizers of the Little Mister & Miss Environment Kenya 2026 unveiled plans to expand the initiative across all 47 counties.
The event, held at Gem Suites Hotel in Nairobi, brought together children, parents, educators, and government representatives for a showcase that combined creative eco-presentations, environmental action projects, and leadership demonstrations.
Noveeen Kendi Mwenda and Brandon Aboge emerged as Grand Miss and Grand Mister Environment Kenya, respectively.
Speaking at the event, Environment PS Festus Ng'eno urged organisers to build a national movement of young environmental leaders. He noted that Kenya has placed climate action, education, and resilience at the centre of its national response.
"If we are preparing the next generation of environmental leaders, then every child must have an opportunity to participate, learn, lead and contribute," Nge'no said. He emphasised that securing Kenya’s environmental future requires joint action.
"The future of Kenya’s environment will not be secured by government alone. It will be secured when government, counties, communities, the private sector, schools, parents and children work together," he added.
Organisers expressed ambitions to bring the program to individual counties to address localised climate challenges like drought, waste management, and deforestation.
They are also seeking pathways for outstanding participants to join global climate discussions, including COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye.
The 2026 edition featured 15 finalists and emphasised inclusion, actively involving children living with disabilities.
Franchise Director and Little Big Talents Kenya founder Joan Musumba said the initiative aims to deepen partnerships and ensure children take practical action within their local communities.
"It gives me a lot of hope and joy to see these children take centre stage on climate matters," Musumba said. "When we equip children with knowledge, confidence and practical opportunities to act today, we are investing in the kind of Kenya and world we want to see tomorrow."
