The family of celebrated journalist Sophie Ikenye has appealed for financial assistance to raise KSh 5 million for her medical expenses, in a heartfelt plea that has touched many Kenyans.
In a statement shared by Phillip Etale, the family revealed that Ikenye has been undergoing treatment for the past eight months across various medical facilities, leaving them financially drained.
“As a family, we have done everything possible to support her medical care, but we have now exhausted all available funds. We are reaching out to her family, friends, fans, and well-wishers to help us raise KSh 5 million to facilitate urgent surgery and ongoing treatment,” the statement read.
Many Kenyans took to social media to send messages of support and wish Ikenye a quick recovery.
Benard Korir wrote: “I am really heartbroken by this news… I have always loved her voice. Get well soon, Sophie.”
Njerry Lynnette added: “May God supply all her needs, but above all, may He heal her.”
Cavin Okoyi also commented: “Sophie is an amazing journalist. We pray for God's healing upon her. Get well soon, Ikenye, in Jesus’ name.”
The family has also asked for prayers during this difficult time but did not disclose details about Ikenye’s illness.
Sophie Ikenye is a distinguished Kenyan journalist and news presenter, best known for her role as a main anchor on BBC World News' Focus on Africa program.
She previously worked with leading Kenyan media outlets, including the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), Citizen TV, and NTV Kenya. In 2009, she joined the BBC World Service in London, initially presenting the radio edition of Focus on Africa before transitioning to its television version in 2012.
In recognition of her contributions to journalism, she was named among the 100 Most Influential Young Africans and the 100 Most Influential Young Kenyans in 2016.
