Kenyan singer and entrepreneur Esther Akoth, Akothee, has shared an emotional post celebrating her daughter, Fancy Makadia, who recently graduated with a master’s degree from Collège de Paris, France.
The 2016 AFRIMMA Best Female Artist (East Africa) winner shared a touching letter to her daughter, narrating the harrowing journey they walked together after her marriage collapsed.
She revealed that at just five years old, Fancy was a frail and often sickly child, and she was a single mother barely surviving.
“When my marriage collapsed, you were barely five years old,” she wrote. “A tiny, sickly child in and out of the hospital. I could barely afford medicine, forget even something as basic as paracetamol.”
In a heartbreaking memory, Akothee recalled a night when her daughter’s fever spiralled out of control. Desperate, she reached out to a doctor who had promised to help them for free. But he never showed up.
“One night, you were burning with fever, vomiting and shivering. I called the doctor, desperate. He told me to meet him at the Bombolulu stage. He promised to pick me up. I waited. And waited. He never came. He forgot me at the station.”
The founder of Akothee Safaris didn’t stop there, recounting the time she was arrested and spent a night in custody but chose to shield her children from the truth.
“None of you went to school that day. I told you my car had broken down and I’d spent the night at the mechanic. I didn’t want to plant the word ‘police’ in your young heart.”
Akothee titled the emotional letter “STORY REWRITTEN”, a tribute to how her daughter’s academic success has healed the wounds of her past.
“My Dearest Daughter, PRUDENCE VANPELT BRINA BUSHNEL – Fancy Makadia. As I write this letter, tears roll down my cheeks—not from pain this time, but from overwhelming gratitude and pride. You have done what many said was impossible. You’ve rewritten my story, and in doing so, you’ve healed a piece of me that I thought would remain broken forever,” she penned.
Fans responded with overwhelming admiration. One follower wrote, “Madam Boss, you are truly a Queen… Wewe sasa unakula matunda ya jasho lako.” Another added, “A very emotional letter to your dearest daughter. Well done Mama, well done children for always making your mum proud.”
