Broke Kariobangi man admits death threat to woman, says he busted her with another man

A Kariobangi man who appeared before the Makadara Law Courts has claimed that he threatened to end the life of the woman he lived with, only after discovering her with another man in the house they shared.

Joseph Wangira Wabuiri, who was arrested at night in a house he had moved into with Mary Wangui Mueni, told Principal Magistrate Gilbert Shikwe that he only made the threats after “busting” Mueni with another man on May 17 at the Kariobangi North estate.

The two had met at Gikomba Market where Mueni, a shoe vendor, says Wabuiri was one of her customers.

Their friendship blossomed into a relationship, and he convinced her he was a police officer stationed at Shauri Moyo. Feeling hopeful about building a future together, Mueni invited him to live with her and her two teenage children.

But the relationship quickly soured.

According to Mueni, Wabuiri turned out to be a freeloader, offering nothing towards rent or food. When pressed to help, he claimed to be broke and later even said he worked for the UN and hadn’t received his salary.

Matters worsened when Mueni was robbed of Sh40,000, her business capital. Hoping for support, she was shocked by his cold response and erratic excuses.

She finally asked him to leave, saying she could no longer carry the financial burden alone.

That’s when things allegedly spiralled. Mueni told police that Wabuiri became hostile and issued terrifying threats, saying he would kill her and himself and do something that “would shock the world”.

She fled to her sister’s home and alerted her children to also leave before reporting him to authorities.

Wabuiri, however, insists his rage was not about rent or money but heartbreak. “I found her with another man in the house,” he told the court, admitting that he did issue threats but claiming it was in a moment of betrayal and pain.
