Albert Ojwang's father demands DIG Eliud Lagat explain son's death:
Meshack Ojwang, father to the late Albert Ojwang [Edward Kiplimo/Standard]

The father of the late Albert Ojwang launched a bitter attack on the government, demanding accountability following the release of autopsy results that revealed his son died from torture while in police custody.

In an emotional address to the press, Meshack Ojwang recounted how officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) came to his home in Homa Bay to arrest his son.

"Naibu Mkuu wa Polisi Bwana Eliud Lagat, wewe ndiwe uliyetuma watu wako, maDCI, waje wachukue mwanangu ili wamlete Nairobi," he said.

Meshack said he complied and handed over his son to the authorities, trusting the process would be lawful.

"Nahitaji uieleze mbona uliua mtoto wangu kupitia kwa sheria. Alikukosea nini ambayo ina gharimu kifo chake?" Meshack questioned, visibly heartbroken.

He challenged the authorities to explain what his son had done to warrant what he described as a "death penalty."

Meshack, who raised Albert single-handedly in Kilifi County by working in a quarry, said he had sacrificed much to educate his son through university. Albert had recently moved back home after completing his degree, full of dreams and plans for the future.

"Sasa leo hii umenivunja mikono, umeniua. Kwa nini uniue?" he lamented. "Why did you have to kill him? What did he steal from you?"

Albert Ojwang, a blogger and teacher, was arrested on June 7, 2025, in Homa Bay following a complaint filed by DIG Eliud Lagat, who accused him of tarnishing his reputation on X.

He was later transferred to Nairobi's Central Police Station, where he died in custody.

Police initially reported that Ojwang died after hitting his head against a wall - a claim now contradicted by the autopsy, which suggests he died as a result of sustained torture.

Government pathologist Dr Bernard Midei revealed that Albert had suffered multiple soft tissue injuries across his body, trunk, and lower limbs, consistent with signs of torture and externally inflicted harm.

The conflicting accounts have now sparked public outrage, with many calling for an independent investigation into his death and questioning whether defamation should ever result in a fatal arrest.

Others are also calling for the dismissal of police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga for authoring the conflicting statement on Albert's death.
