Nairobi woman lends Sh1.4 million to jobless lover, gets dumped when she sought refund

A Nairobi businesswoman has accused her former lover of betrayal and fraud after allegedly swindling her out of Sh1.4 million under the pretext of setting up a business, only to cut ties and threaten to fly back to the United States without repaying the amount.

In a tale of love turned sour, 32-year-old Danson Kachohi Kingongi, a waiter by profession, is said to have convinced Daisy Khasolia to lend him Sh1.414 million in August 2023 after claiming he had lost his job and wanted to start a liquor store in Kayole.

The two were romantically involved at the time, and out of love and trust, Daisy agreed to help. She wired the money through mobile money platforms and bank transfers.

According to court documents, the shop was set up shortly afterwards, and Danson soon left the country for the US, where he stayed for nine months in search of better opportunities.

While he was away, Daisy occasionally passed by the store, which was being run by his sister, but she didn't ask many questions about the business's progress.

However, trouble began when Danson returned to Kenya. Upon inquiring about her money, Daisy was met with silence and then heartbreak.

The accused not only ended their relationship but also told her he would not be refunding the cash.

Shocked and devastated, Daisy reported the matter to the police, fearing that Danson was planning to return to the US and leave her high and dry. Her complaint led to his arrest and arraignment.

Danson is now accused of obtaining Sh1.414 million by false pretence, having made the promise to refund the amount within six months, a promise the prosecution says he never intended to keep.

The case, which was heard at Makadara Law Courts, has sparked conversations online about trust, love, and money in modern relationships.

As proceedings continue, Daisy is left nursing more than just a broken heart, she's also fighting to recover her hard-earned money before her ex disappears beyond the country's borders again.
