Robert Alai warns Boniface Mwangi about Tanzania's CCM after activists arrest:

Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai has issued a stark warning to activist Boniface Mwangi following his recent detention in Tanzania, describing the country’s ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) as a "monster" rooted in the nation’s independence movement.

His caution comes as Mwangi was arrested in Dar es Salaam while attending the treason trial of Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu.

He recounted Mwangi’s bold confrontation with Tanzanian authorities, where the activist reportedly thumped his chest and invoked his rights with the phrase “haki yangu” (my rights).

He further alleged that Mwangi didn’t know what he was up against. “CCM is a monster built from Africa’s independent movement. It’s more dangerous than even NRM in Uganda,” Alai said.

He highlighted the historical dominance of CCM, which has ruled Tanzania uninterrupted since 1961.

He urged Mwangi to tread carefully, warning that dissenters in Tanzania face severe repercussions, including the risk of being “easily killed.”

Alai pointed to the nature of public sympathy, noting, “People who cheer you on here won’t mourn you for more than one week.”

He also went ahead and drew similarities to Uganda, where he referenced the detention of human rights activist Al-Amin Kimathi in 2010.

Alai suggested that Mwangi could face an even worse fate in Tanzania, where CCM’s grip on power has been described as more entrenched than that of Uganda’s NRM.

“Only foreign fools dare CCM in Tanzania,” he concluded.
