Video: "WanTam" chants echo in Milimani courtroom during Hon. Jayne Kihara's arraignment

In a dramatic courtroom scene at Milimani Law Courts, supporters of Naivasha Member of Parliament, Hon. Jayne Kihara, broke into chants of "WanTam".

The chant, originally popularised by Rigathi Gachagua has become a symbol of defiance against the president.

Kihara's lawyers, led by Senior Counsel Kalonzo Musyoka and advocate Ndegwa Njiru, urged the court to reject the plea-taking and dismiss the charges, terming the prosecution a politically motivated witch-hunt.

The courtroom was filled with tension as supporters, undeterred by the formal setting, voiced their support with the rallying cry.

Ndegwa Njiru, in a subsequent post on X, reflected on the event with a mix of humor and frustration, noting, "Fellow freedom fighters, forgive me. I was not familiar with your game...Yani mpaka mbele ya korti bado mmesema Ruto Kasongo Kaongo ni ONE TERM."

The Naivasha MP had been arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) after she declined to honour summons related to alleged offences of incitement and undermining the authority of a public officer.

The legislator, a close ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, was apprehended at her home in Maraigushu, Naivasha, and taken to Naivasha Police Station before being transferred to Nairobi.

Drama unfolded at her residence as more than 20 DCI officers, backed by anti-riot police, stormed the compound while she was hosting a meeting.

She was however released on a personal bond of Sh50,000 pending a court ruling on whether she will face charges of uttering offensive words.
