American sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson has spoken out following a physical altercation with her boyfriend, fellow sprinter Christian Coleman, at an airport last month.

In a series of Instagram Stories, Richardson, 25, acknowledged her mistake, saying the incident had forced her to reflect on her actions.

"I have had a lot of time for self-reflection, understanding that I am not only putting myself in a bad situation but also someone that I deeply care about," she said.

Richardson added that she intended to make better choices for herself, her family, and her fans. She stressed that she had learned to address her problems directly instead of resorting to anger or violence.

"I hold myself accountable and have accepted to do better in my life. I want to do more for my family, friends, and fans, and I appreciate you all for the support. I don't want to run from challenges that confront me head-on. I love and appreciate you all," she said.

The altercation occurred on July 27. According to USA Today, a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) supervisor reported seeing Richardson assault a man, later identified as Coleman, at a security checkpoint.

Surveillance footage allegedly showed Richardson pushing Coleman into a column after an argument, then following him and throwing headphones at him as he walked away.

She was arrested for fourth-degree domestic violence, booked into jail, and released the following afternoon.

Coleman later defended Richardson, telling reporters at the U.S. Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, that she was "a human being and a great person" who was dealing with personal challenges.

"I don't feel like she should have been arrested. I mean, people have discussions and emotions and stuff like that. She has things that she needs to work on for herself, of course. So do I, so do you, so does everybody," he said.

The couple has been together for two years.
