Cristiano Ronaldo confirms 2026 World Cup will be his last

Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the final tournament of his legendary career, as Portugal prepare to face Spain in Monday's Round of 16 clash in Arlington, Texas.

The 41-year-old captain is featuring in a record sixth World Cup and continues to make history. Earlier in the tournament, he became the first player to score in six different World Cups after netting against Uzbekistan in the group stage.

Ronaldo has remained influential throughout Portugal's campaign, scoring twice against Uzbekistan before converting a penalty against Croatia in the Round of 32.

The goal was also his first in a World Cup knockout match.

Speaking ahead of the showdown with Spain, Ronaldo said he is determined to enjoy every remaining moment, knowing this will be his final World Cup.

"It's about enjoying it as much as possible. The day will come when I retire from international football," Ronaldo told ESPN.

"Whatever happens tomorrow, Cristiano will leave with a clear conscience. Not 100%, but 1000%, because I've given everything to football. I don't need it, I have a good life, but it's about passion. I play football because I love it.

"You have to enjoy every day. And I've scored three goals at this World Cup, so I'm not doing too badly."

The Portuguese star described the 2026 tournament as the most memorable of his career because of the atmosphere and support from fans.

"It's been fantastic. It goes beyond the pitch. This is the World Cup I'll remember the most because of people's passion. Emotionally, it's been the best. I've enjoyed it very much," he said.

Although he has never lifted the World Cup trophy, Ronaldo said it would not define his legacy.

"I'm not lacking anything in life. I'm not going to be more or less Cristiano because I win the World Cup. We have the qualities to win, but only one country can win it. Age gives you maturity and experience," he said.

Ronaldo also reflected on the criticism he has faced throughout his career, saying it has helped shape him as a person.

"I'm thankful even for the attacks I receive. I hope to live another 40 years with the criticism because that's how you grow the most as a person," he said.
