Apple has unveiled its first foldable iPhone, dubbed the iPhone Duo, in what marks the company’s biggest smartphone design change since the original iPhone.
The nearly Sh260,000 ($2,000) device has a passport-like design that folds into a compact phone and opens to reveal a larger screen. It has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner screen.
Apple said the phone is built with a titanium body and a custom hinge designed to make the fold in the screen less noticeable. The company also used ultra-thin glass and a flexible material in the display.
“Others have created foldables that just feel like two phones awkwardly stuck together,” said Apple Chief Executive John Ternus. “iPhone Duo brings an entirely new design while preserving everything you love from an iPhone.”
The iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip and comes with a 48-megapixel dual-camera system and two batteries. It also features a front camera built into the display and supports the Apple Pencil.
Apple also unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, with prices starting at Sh155,000 ($1,199).
The new Pro models feature an adjustable-aperture main camera designed to improve photography in low light, as well as faster processing and larger batteries.
Apple says the Pro Max can provide up to 45 hours of video playback on a single charge.
The company also announced the Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4 and AirPods 5 as part of its latest hardware refresh.
The standard iPhone models, Apple Watches and AirPods will go on sale globally on Friday, September 18. Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo will open on October 16, with the foldable phone set to hit stores on October 23.
