Dreekz: I got VIP treatment on my first visit to Nai

He is a British-Kenyan hip-hop artist with sounds and vibes that blend UK hip-hop beats with his Nairobi roots and culture.

Writing and performing all his material, Dreekz’s natural lyricism and vocal harmonies fuse UK rap with the latest Afrobeat and Amapiano sounds to serve up a beautiful mix of the best of London and Nairobi.

Born in Swindon, UK, and with a deep well of musical inspiration from his Kenyan family, Dreekz has been writing music, playing drums, and performing at Church gospel choirs since the age of 12.

A gifted dancer, with skills boosted as an elite-level youth goalkeeper at Reading FC Academy, he broke onto the scene with his debut 2022 single “Party” and electric “Kenyan Freestyle” rap that went viral on Tiktok. Amapiano’s anthem “Down For Me” was released in May 2023.

“I'm the first Kenyan artist to premier a song on BBC (Down for me) and GRM Daily (party), my sound can be described as Afrobeats with a pinch of Kenyan flavour since I mix a little bit of Swahili in each song that I do,” he says

Dreekz is currently in Kenya for his project dubbed Kennections, which is a five-week tour where he will be traversing his motherland building bridges with the heavyweights in the industry as he aspires to connect the UK music scene with the Kenyan music scene.

Although not new in Kenya, Dreekz says this time he was received like a king and he felt the love that his countrymen had for him.

“As soon as I landed in Kenya, I was received warmly and I could feel the brotherhood love all around me. But the highlight was having the minister for culture and sports from Murang'a County, Noah Gachucha welcome me to my roots, which is where my father hails from,” he says.

“The minister was also impressed with my work and he has invited me to work with him to promote talent as he also has the same aim with the musicians from that county.”

While on his official tour, Breekz says he is working to ensure whatever he has in store for his fans is worth the wait. “I have some works in the pipeline which includes collabos from artistes such as Buruklyn Boyz as well as an Amapiano track dubbed Amenibariki.”

His single Grind is also out.
