SDA Church bans hired MCs, comedians

The Southern Kenya Lake Field of the Seventh Day Adventist Church has banned the use of hired masters of ceremonies in its functions.

The SDA church says they have stopped the hiring masters of ceremonies on the pulpit during church events.

In a letter dated October 10, 2023 and written by the Field’s Executive Secretary Daniel Odek and copied to all pastors, elders, choirs, solo artists and evangelists, all powers to organise and allow for church activities will be done by the field executive director.

Odek says; “The Administrative Committee of the Southern Kenya Lake Field has taken an action to withdraw the powers from district pastors of granting choirs, solo artists and evangelists opportunities to participate in conducting the launching of music events.”

The letter says; “The engagement of masters of ceremonies will only be done by approval of church boards and church business.

“They will appoint one of the elders or church officers within the local Church where the worship or the celebration is taking place,” reads part of the letter.

According to the executive secretary, any form of entertainment or celebrity performances on the pulpit are to be refrained from with immediate effect and pastors are to be in charge of all pulpits.

In his letter, Odek said the administrative committee had also barred one solo artist identified as Lourine Otieno from singing within any Southern Kenya Lake Filed Churches.

The committee’s action is said to have been triggered by the activities that happened a few days ago when the said Lourine was launching her song within the Southern Kenya Lake Field.

At the launch, a male comedian attended the event dressed in female attire complete with a head scarf and was allowed to preside over the event from the pulpit.

The action by the administrative committee has attracted valid reactions from church members even as the SDA church begins to experience a rising number of solo artists and choirs launching songs nearly on every Saturday.

Jasper Osele said that nowadays if one is not a clown, comedian or motivational speaker then people will argue that the sermon was boring. “Since when did God’s word become boring.”

Akoto Akinyi said everyone is a sinner. “Jesus went down as she was with Mary Magdalene and wrote on the soil, everyone saw her sin and hence we should not mention names in public places rather call and show the right path.”

David Ochieng said; “We need to have boundaries, not turning sacred things into comedy. The church needs to take action against such a level of foolishness.”

He added; “Conformity to Worldly customs converts the church to the world, it never converts the world to Christ. Familiarity with sin will inevitably cause it to appear less repulsive. He who chooses to associate with the servants of Satan will soon cease to fear their master.!

June 2022 figures indicate that the region has 287 churches, and 44,262 members.

Executive responsibility in the SDA Church is given to representative bodies and officers to govern the Church.
