Pharmacist under probe for secretly filming Rigathi Gachagua buying medicine

A Kenyan pharmacist is under investigation by the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) for allegedly recording DCP Leader Rigathi Gachagua inside a pharmacy without his consent.

The footage, which showed Gachagua buying medication during a political tour, went viral on Wednesday, sparking debate and prompting swift regulatory action.

In a statement on Thursday, February 26, PSK President Wairimu Mbogo condemned the act as a "serious breach of privacy and healthcare confidentiality."

She emphasised that every Kenyan, regardless of public profile, deserves confidential care.

We officially condemn a serious breach of patient privacy involving a public figure at a pharmacy outlet.

"PSK wishes to state clearly and unequivocally that recording any client within a pharmacy setting without consent constitutes a serious breach. We extend our regret over the apparent violation that has occurred," Mbogo said.

The video, shared widely on social media, showed Gachagua at the counter in what appeared to be a retail pharmacy.

It quickly racked up thousands of views, with reactions ranging from amusement at the candid glimpse into the politician's life to outrage over the privacy invasion.

Critics warned that such incidents erode trust in healthcare providers, while supporters said the pharmacist’s actions exposed everyday realities of public figures.

Mbogo highlighted the wider implications, saying, "This incident reflects ethical gaps in our healthcare system and the critical importance of ensuring pharmacy outlets operate under qualified, licensed professionals who uphold standards." She urged legal action against violators to deter future breaches.

The PSK has launched a formal probe that could lead to disciplinary measures, including license suspension.
