Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata will receive Sh136,068 in legal fees from Occidental Insurance Company Limited, the High Court in Chuka has ruled.
Justice Lagat Korir directed the insurer to pay the fees owed to Irungu Kang’ata & Co. Advocates since August 2024, with 14 percent annual interest from August 23, 2024 until full settlement.
The Governor, through his firm, had sued Occidental Insurance for failing to pay legal representation fees incurred on August 28, 2024.
“In the premise, I allow the application and enter judgment in favour of the Applicant (Irungu Kang’ata & Co. Advocates) for the amount reflected in the Certificate of costs dated August 28, 2024 being Sh136,068 with interest at court rates from the date of the certificate till payment in full,” Justice Korir said.
The judge explained that once costs are taxed and a certificate issued, the court only needs to enter judgment if payment is not made and no reference is filed.
He added there was no evidence the Certificate of Taxation had been altered or set aside, noting that the insurance company neither appeared in court nor filed a response when the application came up on February 10, 2026.
“It is clear that the amount contained in the Certificate of Taxation is final and that this court has the power to enter judgment for the taxed amount,” Justice Korir said.
Advocate Sylvester Omondi, in a supporting affidavit dated December 17, 2025, said he handled the case and there was no dispute over their retainer.
Omondi added: “Our client had not paid the taxed amount and it was in the interest of justice that the application be allowed.”
