Beyond football: Music, culture and tourism to take centre stage at 2026 World Cup

The countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup is entering its final stretch before the tournament kicks off on June 11 across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

This expanded 48-team edition is shaping up to be a global cultural spectacle, combining football, music, entertainment, and tourism on an unprecedented scale.

The tournament's official anthem, "Dai Dai", brings together Colombian pop star Shakira and Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Burna Boy in a high-energy track blending Latin rhythms with Afrobeats influences.

The musical lineup extends far beyond the official track, with a wave of World Cup-themed releases including "Ase Ase" by Rema, Lisa, and Anitta, "Illuminate" by Jessie Reyez and Elyanna, "Lighter" by Jelly Roll and Carín León, and "Champions" by popular American streamer IShowSpeed.

These musical collaborations will spill over into major live entertainment events planned across the host nations. Mexico City's celebrations are expected to feature J Balvin and Tyla, while Los Angeles will host a Hollywood-inspired show headlined by Katy Perry at SoFi Stadium, and Toronto's festivities are set to showcase Canadian music icons Alanis Morissette and Michael Bublé.

Visiting fans will experience these performances alongside deep dives into local traditions, as the host countries showcase their distinct cultures. Canada will highlight its outdoor lifestyle and the Indigenous heritage of the Inuit and Métis communities, while Mexico spotlights its rich culinary heritage, colourful festivals, and colonial architecture. Meanwhile, the United States will showcase its global cultural influence through its theme parks, Hollywood productions, and musical roots in jazz and rock and roll.

This cultural showcase extends to the iconic venues hosting the matches. Fans will experience striking architectural designs like the translucent roof of SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, the volcano-inspired architecture of Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, the sleek metallic exterior of Monterrey's Estadio BBVA, and the cutting-edge design of Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

These architectural marvels are set to attract global celebrities and public figures, with stars like comedian Kevin Hart and singer Nicole Scherzinger expected in the stands alongside legendary Congolese superfan Michel Kuka Mbolading, popularly known as the "Lumumba Man".

Even the participating teams are leaning into the experience by establishing training camps in locations that offer unique tourism attractions. Brazil is expected to base its operations in Morristown, New Jersey, while Argentina and the Netherlands are set to camp in Kansas City to take advantage of its vibrant live music and dining scene.
