Iyaani to tour Kenyan high schools to promote peace amid rampant unrest

Kenyan musician Iyaani has announced plans to visit high schools across the country in an effort to engage students and help address rising cases of unrest in learning institutions.

He said the initiative is motivated by concern over an increasing number of strikes and disturbances reported in schools, noting that learners should be given space to express themselves in constructive and safe ways rather than resorting to disruptions.

“Following the recent rise in cases of unrest in schools, I have decided to visit different institutions to engage learners and remind them of the importance of education,” he said in a social media post.

Iyaani added that the visits will focus on strengthening communication between students and school administrators while encouraging a stronger appreciation of education.

“My goal is to encourage open dialogue and create safe spaces where students can freely express themselves on matters affecting their education and well-being,” he said.

He further called on teachers, parents, students and education officials to collaborate in building more supportive learning environments.

“Let’s work together to make learning enjoyable, schools more learner-friendly, and education a journey that inspires every student to thrive,” he added.

His remarks come amid a rise in student unrest in parts of the country, with several secondary schools recently reporting strikes, demonstrations and incidents of property damage that have disrupted learning and prompted administrative intervention.

Alliance High School and Loreto Girls High School Limuru are among the prominent elite national schools that were recently forced to close indefinitely and send students home following destructive student unrest and fire incidents.

In Embu County alone, political leaders have raised alarms over spreading strikes that have paralysed learning at Kangaru School, Sacred Heart Kyeni Girls High School, and Siakago Day Secondary School.

The wave of strikes follows a tragic dormitory fire at Utumishi Girls Senior Secondary School in Gilgil that claimed the lives of 16 students.
