By | July 2, 2025

The final journey of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang is one filled with grief and heartache, as family and friends prepare to lay him to rest in his rural home in Kakoth Village, Homa Bay County.

A video shared online captures a heartbreaking scene, women wailing beside Ojwang's shiny, mahogany casket, overcome with emotion as the weight of his death sinks in.

The sleek, black limousine hearse carrying his body has a modern design with glass panel doors that open upwards, offering a clear view of the polished coffin inside.

Shiny handles and ornamental accents mark the casket's exterior, reflecting the family's effort to give Ojwang a dignified and honourable send-off.

The body of the late Albert Ojwang has arrived at Ridgeways Baptist Church along Kiambu Road, Nairobi for his Requiem Mass, set to begin at 10:00 AM today.

Family, friends, and members of the public have gathered to pay their final respects.

Ojwang's death in police custody has stirred widespread outrage. He was arrested at his home in Kakoth Village, Kabondo Kasipul Constituency, after Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat allegedly filed a complaint over a social media post that he claimed had tarnished his name.

Eyewitnesses said men on motorbikes, identifying themselves as police officers, picked him up and whisked him away. Days later, news emerged that Ojwang had died, sparking confusion and anger.

Initially, Nairobi police boss Adamson Nyaga claimed Ojwang sustained injuries after hitting his head on the cell wall. He said officers noticed the injuries and rushed him to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

However, the narrative changed when Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja later stated Ojwang had been found unconscious during a routine cell check before being rushed to the hospital.

The conflicting accounts have only deepened suspicions over what truly happened. In response to public outcry, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the case.

Several officers believed to be linked to the incident have since been arrested.

As the hearse made its way from Nairobi to Ojwang's final resting place, the mood remains somber, a young man's life cut short under disturbing and unclear circumstances.
