A parliamentary committee session, today, has shed light on the challenges facing Kenya's delegation to the upcoming 25th Summer Deaflympics in Tokyo, set to commence on 15 November.
Led by Nominated Senator Crystal Asige, the committee grilled the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports over inadequate funding and support for deaf athletes, revealing a stark funding shortfall that has curtailed the nation's participation.
In August, Ms. Asige sought a detailed statement from Cabinet Secretary Hon. Salim Mvurya regarding Kenya's readiness for the global event.

Her concerns centred on insufficient financial allocation, the welfare and inclusion of deaf athletes, the governance of Deaf Sports Federations, and the need for transparency in the selection process.
Today's session saw CS Mvurya confirm that only five disciplines-Athletics (Men and Women), Basketball (Women), Golf (Men and Women), Swimming (Men and Women), and Handball (Men)-will represent Kenya, a significant reduction from the originally planned 12.
The reason? A budget constraint that has limited funding to KSh 419 million, far below the KSh 1 billion initially proposed.
Despite some progress in the discussions, Ms. Asige expressed frustration, noting that the deeper issue remains unresolved.
"Deaf athletes in our country require far more deliberate support and budget if they are to achieve athletic excellence and represent Kenya on par with other athletes," she stated.
Crystal Asige has been vocal in fighting for PWDS. In may this year, her PWD Bill became law.
"History in the making: today, my PWD Bill becomes law. We walked this road together, raised our voices, stood our ground, and believed in the possibility of a more inclusive Kenya.
