Ghana has launched a new e-Visa platform aimed at modernising immigration services, tightening border security and boosting trade and tourism.
President John Dramani Mahama unveiled the system in Accra, describing it as a major step in digital transformation that positions Ghana as a leading digital destination in Africa.
He said the platform reflects the country’s commitment to technological progress and improved service delivery.
According to France 24, the rollout is intended to streamline entry processes and enhance efficiency at Ghana’s borders.
Under the new framework, all holders of African passports travelling to Ghana for business will be required to apply for visas exclusively through the e-Visa platform.
The policy replaces the previous visa-on-arrival arrangement, ensuring all applications are processed before travellers reach the border, according to mint.gov.gh.
Mahama defended the shift as part of a wider continental integration agenda aimed at strengthening ties with Africans and the diaspora, while easing mobility for business and cultural exchange.
Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak welcomed the system, calling it a significant upgrade in border management.
He said moving from manual processing to a technology-driven system would allow authorities to flag potential security risks earlier while speeding up legitimate travel.
He added that pre-screening applications would improve both efficiency and risk management, while signalling Ghana’s openness to increased investment, tourism and global partnerships.
Mubarak also commended the inter-agency collaboration behind the rollout, citing the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Transport, the Ghana Immigration Service, technical teams and other partners for their role in developing the platform.
