The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has unveiled six official fan zones in Nairobi for supporters without tickets to watch Harambee Stars' decisive African Nations Championship (CHAN) Group A match against Zambia on Sunday, 17 August 2025.
The public will be able to follow the action on giant screens at Uhuru Park (CBD), Lucky Summer (behind Kasarani Stadium), Dandora Stadium, Jacaranda Grounds, Utalii's Stima Club, and Kibera DC Grounds.
FKF says the zones have been strategically positioned across city neighbourhoods to give fans a comfortable viewing experience while easing congestion at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
The move follows strict crowd control measures imposed after chaotic scenes marred Harambee Stars' previous fixture against Morocco. That match, which ended in a shock 1-0 win for Kenya, saw stampedes at Ngomongo Roundabout, forcing police to fire tear gas and flash grenades to disperse panicked crowds. Inside the stadium, stone-throwing fans clashed with security officers as ticketless supporters overran gates, overwhelming stewards.
These incidents prompted the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to slash Kasarani's matchday capacity to 60%, limiting attendance to 27,000 fans. CAF also banned thermal paper tickets, insisting that only electronic tickets be used.
The security breaches earned Kenya a hefty KSh 6.5 million fine and a stern warning. The CAF Disciplinary Board ruled that the country had failed to ensure adequate safety during the Morocco game, ordering the Local Organising Committee (LOC) to roll out a nationwide campaign reminding fans of safety protocols and entry requirements.
CAF cautioned that failure to implement the new measures could see Kenya stripped of the right to host future matches, with fixtures potentially moved to alternative venues.
FKF and the government hope the new fan zones will prevent a repeat of the Morocco chaos and ensure Sunday's clash against Zambia is remembered for football, not disorder.
