'Mbili': Defender Jonathan Tah celebrates Leverkusen's win with Swahili caption, hit song Finale

Football, culture and music have met in a striking social media moment after German defender Jonathan Tah marked his club’s historic domestic double with a Swahili caption and an East African soundtrack.

Tah, who plays for Bayer Leverkusen, celebrated the season in which his side secured both the Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal cup by posting a photo on Instagram showing him wearing both winners’ medals.

But it was his caption that drew global attention. Instead of using German or English, the centre-back wrote a single Swahili word, “Mbili”, referring to the two trophies won this season.

The cultural crossover extended beyond text.

Tah paired the post with Finale, a collaborative hit featuring Kenyan artist Bien and Tanzanian star Ali Kiba, further amplifying the East African connection.

The combination of elite European football and East African music quickly went viral, with fans praising the unexpected celebration and highlighting the growing global visibility of Swahili language and culture.

Social media users across East Africa reacted with excitement, with comments ranging from celebratory praise to playful banter.

One user wrote, “A man with many trophies in the ‘Finale’ song ? from the king ?,” while another congratulated the player, saying, “Well done on your Bundesliga trophy, asante sana ??.”

Others leaned into regional humour and rivalry, with one comment reading, “Tunajuwa nyimbo ni ya Ben lkn Kipande ni cha Alikiba from ??? Wakenya msitufikee jmn ??,” while another quipped, “Ati mbili yooh, ama wewe ni morio wa yole.”

A separate fan simply added, “This is an Arsenal song from Kenya, much love from Kenya.”
