Scotland's return to the FIFA World Cup after nearly three decades is proving a boon for Boston's hospitality industry, particularly beer sellers.

The influx of Scottish supporters, known as the Tartan Army, has triggered a surge in beer consumption across the city, with several establishments reporting record sales during the opening days of the tournament.

Boston Beer Company, brewer of Samuel Adams, told NBC its Downtown Boston Taproom temporarily ran out of its flagship Boston Lager after demand far exceeded expectations.

Fans reportedly consumed about four times the volume usually sold during a busy four-day holiday weekend.

The unexpected demand forced the brewery to arrange emergency deliveries and increase stock replenishment throughout the week.

Taproom staff described the scenes as unprecedented, noting that despite offering 20 beers on tap, most customers opted for Boston Lager. More than 3,000 pints were sold over four days, leaving dozens of empty kegs.

Scottish supporters have been highly visible across Boston as fans travelled from around the world to back their national team in its first World Cup appearance since 1998.

Other bars have also enjoyed a business boom. Hennessy's Bar reported sales that surpassed figures typically recorded during St Patrick's Day celebrations, one of the busiest periods of the year for Irish pubs.

Bar owners and staff say the turnout is unlike anything they have witnessed before, underlining both the passion of Scotland's travelling support and the economic impact major international sporting events can have on host cities.
