A 39-year-old man died by suicide after he was allegedly barred from burying his wife at Nyadhiwa village of Migori County.
It is said the man was involved in a burial dispute with another man who also claimed to be the woman's husband.
When the intervention of the local administration was sought, it was resolved that the other man, who was discovered to be the woman's first husband with whom he had sired three children, be given the rights to bury her body.
Both of them had paid dowry the woman's family, according to residents.
Aggrieved by the realisation that he would not be able to inter his wife's body at his home or even attend her burial ceremony, the man threatened that he would commit suicide, a warning that made close relatives keep a close watch on him.
Despite family member's efforts to ensure that the man did not make good his threats, he was found dead on September 1, 2025.
According to police reports, his body was found dangling from the roof of his bedroom.
"He did not leave behind a suicide note. We have launched investigations into the incident," said Rongo Sub-County Police Commander Salim Fundi.
According to Fundi, the man used a sisal rope to hang himself. The deceased is said to have been thrown into depression after the death of his wife.
He had lived with the woman for seven years and they had two children together.
Fundi urged residents to seek for help and share their problems with the people they trust for solution instead of committing suicide.
