Eliud Kipchoge's jersey, leather jacket outfit in New York sparks fashion debate

Kenyan long-distance runner Eliud Kipchoge has stirred a flurry of reactions online after a video of him in a striking outfit surfaced from New York, USA.

In the viral clip, the celebrated INEOS champion stepped out in a blue basketball jersey, yellow trousers, and matching blue sneakers, topping off the look with a black leather jacket, a fashion choice that instantly became the subject of online banter.

Many Kenyans humorously linked the jacket to the well-known "chaget" style palette linked to the Rift.

Kipchoge was seen being ushered into a black SUV by two aides, one holding the door as another waited for the rest of his party.

He was accompanied by a young woman and a man, both stylishly dressed.

The woman wore a black leather jacket, a black dress, and a brown head wrap, while the man opted for a black jacket, trousers, and a white T-shirt.

As the SUV drove off, reactions on social media poured in.

“That’s Kipchoge, the GOAT,” wrote Sammy Wakaba on X.

Another user, Gilbert Odera, commented, “Is this Kipchoge? Heri angevaa tu a simple casual.”

“Dressed by Ye,” joked Iddy Baraza, while Byron Ndegwa added, “No disrespect to the OG Kipchoge, but this look is totally ridiculous.”

User Dujana quipped, “Just got to Rift Valley — nine out of ten guys are rocking leather jackets.”

Despite the light-hearted teasing, Kipchoge remains one of the most revered athletes in history.

The 41-year-old has won two consecutive Olympic marathon gold medals (2016 and 2020), conquered multiple World Marathon Majors, including London, Berlin, Chicago, and Tokyo, and set the official marathon world record in Berlin in 2022.

He is also renowned for being the first human to run a marathon in under two hours, clocking 1:59:40.2 during the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Vienna, Austria, on October 12, 2019, a feat not recognised officially due to the event’s special pacing setup.

Kipchoge, who also holds a 5000m world championship gold from 2003 and multiple World Athlete of the Year titles, continues to inspire admiration, and occasionally, a little fashion debate.
