Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Monday visited students from Utumishi Girls Academy who are admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) following a recent dormitory fire incident.

During the visit, Sonko wished the recovering students a quick recovery and personally handed them supplies alongside bouquets of flowers.

The items included tissue paper, bottled water, bananas, yoghurt, oranges, grapes, apples, sanitary pads and energy drinks including Ribena and Lucozade.

He interacted with the students individually, inquiring about their well-being and the whereabouts of their parents or guardians.

“You will be okay. Pole sana. Where do your parents stay? I will take their phone number,” he told one of the students.

In another exchange, a student said her parents were in Nakuru. Sonko then offered to call her mother, who said they had travelled to Nairobi and were waiting outside the ward to be allowed in to see her.

“Tuko hapa nje tunangojea tuambiwe tuingie. Unaweza tembea?” the mother asked. The student responded that she was able to sit up and was feeling better.

Sonko also met parents at the ward and assured them of his support and quick recovery for their children.

“We are here to support them. I was there at Utumishi Girls yesterday and it was bad. This is no time for politics, we are here to support you. Chukua number yangu tutawasiliana,” he said.

On social media, Kenyans reacted positively to the gesture, with many praising his continued outreach to people in need.

On X, user Kawangware Finest wrote: “The reason Sonko is loved is that he does small things that mean a lot.”

The tragedy occurred on May 28, 2026, when a fast-spreading fire ripped through the upper floor of a two-storey dormitory at the school in Gilgil, Nakuru County, killing 16 students and injuring 79 others.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba confirmed that the seven students receiving specialised care at KNH were airlifted to Nairobi for advanced treatment, while the remaining injured learners have since been discharged.

Detectives have now used forensic CCTV analysis to positively identify seven students suspected of executing the attack, with six currently in police custody and efforts underway to trace the remaining suspect, who was initially released to her parents.
