Kenya School of Law President Joshua Okayo has assured protesters of their safety ahead of the upcoming 25th nationwide demonstrations against police brutality.
Speaking to TNX Africa, Joshua expressed confidence in the protest organizers’ preparedness to keep participants safe during the protests.
“There are comrades who have said, ‘you guys, let's go to the street and we will do the job to ensure that we can protect each one of us.’ We have a strong bond of camaraderie between us. We are going to be safe,” he said.
Okayo also issued a stern warning to anyone planning to infiltrate the protests and cause chaos.
“Anyone who is going to come from outside, any face that we don’t recognize, we will employ what we call active non-violence. We will protect ourselves by any means necessary,” Okayo warned.
However, he declined to reveal specific security strategies the group intends to deploy.
“Some of these things we don’t expose to the enemy. We consider the state our enemy because the moment the state unleashes goons, they are your enemy. So, we are not going to tell them our tricks,” he said.
Highlighting the purpose of the protests, Okayo called on Kenyans to turn up in large numbers, bringing national symbols to express unity and purpose.
“Let us go to the streets in our millions of numbers and let us communicate loudly and clear we want a better Kenya. Come out tomorrow with your flag, a copy of the constitution and come out to sing songs of reparation, revolution and freedom,” he added.
Okayo’s comments come at a time when youth protesters intend to take to the streets to mark one year since they took to the streets to protest against the 2024 Finance Bill.
During last week’s anti-police brutality protests, goons armed with batons and tyre whips wreaked havoc on protesters, a move that was widely condemned.
