Video: Outrage as police officer filmed violently handling woman at Eldoret Law Courts

A Kenyan police officer has come under sharp criticism after a viral video captured him aggressively shoving a woman at the Eldoret Law Courts.

The undated video, which has sparked widespread outrage online, shows the uniformed officer escorting a woman in a green dress through the court premises while forcefully pushing her from behind. The woman appeared to be pleading or attempting to reason with him, but the officer ignored her and continued to shove her forward.

The incident has reignited debate over police conduct and professionalism, with many social media users condemning what they described as unnecessary use of force.

Others questioned why a male officer was handling a female, especially within a controlled government facility like a court.

On X (formerly Twitter), Paul Ouma Neko wrote, “The law is crystal clear: only female officers are permitted to handle, arrest, or frisk female suspects. What happened here isn’t law enforcement — it’s barbarism, abuse of power, and a total disgrace to the badge. We won’t stay silent. We’ll make sure he’s exposed, prosecuted, and stripped of the very uniform he’s bringing to shame.”

Another user, Kilei Kilinda, echoed the sentiment, posting, “Such reprehensible behaviour by a police officer — manifested in the physical assault of a woman under the guise of lawful authority — does not exemplify valour but rather betrays a deplorable amalgam of cowardice, indiscipline, and criminality masquerading as official enforcement.”

Beatrice, another user on X, questioned the need for physical aggression, stating, “Even if she is a criminal, she is not resisting or fighting the police officer. Why is he pushing her yet they are in a government office anyway?”

Many netizens have since called for the officer to be identified and held accountable, demanding transparency from authorities. “Anybody from Eldoret Law Court identify that rogue police officer assaulting this lady. We need his full name, station, and badge number,” one post read.

As of now, no official statement has been issued regarding the incident.

Under Kenyan law, police officers are permitted to use reasonable physical force when making arrests, but such force must not be excessive. The level of force applied should be proportionate to the situation — considering factors such as the seriousness of the alleged offence and whether the suspect resists arrest.

The viral video has once again placed the spotlight on police accountability and the treatment of women in custody, with Kenyans online demanding swift action and justice.
