A passenger who was allegedly pushed from a moving bus due fare dispute, has succumbed to his injuries after being ran over, with his death confirmed on Friday afternoon at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), where he had been receiving treatment.

In the video that has since gone viral, the involved bus, was captured speeding away after a passenger was seen falling onto the road after being pushed from the moving bus.

Reports indicate that the victim, who is said to be a student, was rescued and rushed to KNH by the owner of a private vehicle who recorded the incident and remained by his side throughout his treatment.

The incident has reignited public outrage and backlash as such incidents involving loss of life tied to Matatus are increasing.

Just a few days ago, a Matatu ‘nganya’ plying Eastlands/Komarock-CBD route, was involved in a fatal accident that claimed the lives of seven youth and injured several, along Enterprise Road, prompting NTSA to unleash crackdown on to the safety non-complying Matatus.

Survivors of that crash recounted moments of panic before the vehicle lost control while reportedly engaging in a reckless ‘challenge’ commonly referred to as "nyoka nyoka",

The matatu culture that glorifies ‘nganya’, extremely decorated PSVs with loud music popular among the youth, have been accused of endangering lives especially while partaking in the viral ‘Nyoka Nyoka’ challenge and frequent rogue racing other matatus on the road.

The NTSA, has since summoned the Risen Sacco officials, “Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and friends of those who lost their loved ones. We wish those injured a swift and full recovery," the authority said in a statement.

Such accidents are almost not uncommon in the country based on recent history:

In February 2026 along Salama-Mombasa Highway, a crash between a matatu and a lorry killed more than five passengers.

In December-January 2025, along Eldoret-Webuye Road & Nairobi-Nakuru, NTSA cancelled the operating licenses of several Saccos, including Naekana Route 134 Sacco and Uwezo Coast Shuttle, following a series of fatal holiday crashes.

11 deaths were reported After Head-on Collision Between Matatu & School Bus On March 28, 2025, along the Molo-Keringet way.

In May 2025 in Nyeri/Tetu Constituency, the famous "Uppercut" matatu, known for its defiant operations and stunts, crashed, injuring 22 passengers, 4 of whom were left in critical situation.

In March 2025, Gilbert Thuo Kimani was allegedly brutally pushed from a moving Super Metro bus near Kahawa Sukari following an argument over a KES 30 balance, resulting in his immediate death and a massive public backlash.

In May 2023, a passenger was reportedly thrown from an Embassava Sacco bus in Nairobi, adding to yet another horrific statistical record of transport-related deaths.

In 2018, 21-year-old college student Doreen Kinya, reportedly fell to her death from a speeding Zamzam Sacco matatu on the Githurai route. A High Court judge has since sentenced the crew involved to 10 years in prison for manslaughter.

Fresh questions are now being directed at NTSA, PSV operators, crew conduct, and the enforcement of passenger safety regulations in the country.

“We remain committed to thorough investigations, and we will take appropriate action,” NTSA said.
