Bereaved parents at the requiem mass for the 16 students who lost their lives in the tragic Utumishi Academy dormitory fire have called for justice while urging parents across the country to dedicate more time to raising and guiding their children.

Speaking during the emotional ceremony, Grace Wacheke, who lost her child in the fire, appealed to parents not to become so consumed by the pursuit of wealth that they neglect their responsibility to nurture their children.

"Parents, let us create time for our children. Let us not focus on looking for money and forget that we have a sole responsibility of bringing up lives. Some of these children are seeking attention in the wrong ways," said Grace.

She noted that parental presence and guidance are crucial in helping children navigate challenges and avoid seeking validation in unhealthy ways.

At the same time, Grace called on government officials to move beyond words of sympathy and ensure those responsible are held accountable.

"We trust that you will use your authority to seek justice," she added, urging leaders to demonstrate action, accountability and leadership in the aftermath of the tragedy.

The requiem mass has brought together hundreds of grieving families, friends, students, government officials and members of the public to honour the lives lost in one of the country's deadliest school fire incidents.

First Lady Rachel Ruto is leading the nation in mourning during the ceremony, which has drawn senior government leaders and other dignitaries in solidarity with the affected families.

After the memorial service bodies of the 15 victims present at the stadium will be released to their families for burial arrangements. One of the victims was laid to rest on Sunday in Kwale County after her body was released earlier, becoming the first student to be buried following the tragedy.

As the nation mourns, families continue to demand answers and justice while hoping that lessons from the tragedy will help prevent similar incidents in schools in the future.
