A newly surfaced video has shed light on the moments leading up to the dramatic incident in Migori where a shoe was thrown towards President William Ruto during a public address.
In the clip, which has gone viral on social media, a man is seen holding a shoe up in the air while the President is speaking.
Seconds later, another individual knocks the shoe from behind, sending it flying in Ruto’s direction.
The President deflected the shoe with his hand, narrowly missing his face.
The video has sparked fresh debate online, with many Kenyans questioning whether the shoe was deliberately aimed at the President or if it was simply a bizarre accident.
Musician Avril weighed in, commenting: “So he was just hitting to move the shoe so that he could see, cause someone else decided to hold it up in his eye view, and it flew away. Wah.”
Another user wrote: “Hata maybe their intention was not to hit him. You can clearly see the owner of the shoe blocking others, hasira ya mtu kutoa kiatu mbele na kiatu na kimbelembele ikaenda kusalimia Rais.”
Social media user @ogotjohn had a more serious take, advising: “Ruto shouldn't think that having a battalion of Security Officers makes him safe or protected. Let him halt his premature 2027 reelection campaigns, get back to his Harambee House office, and work for those who elected him.”
An earlier video had failed to show where the shoe came from, leading to speculation and a flood of memes and parodies online.
Authorities are now reportedly questioning three individuals in connection with the incident.
