Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has welcomed fresh poll results that place him as the leading perceived successor to the late opposition leader Raila Odinga, describing the ranking as validation of his political record.

Speaking exclusively to TNX Africa, Owino dismissed critics questioning the findings, saying his position reflects consistent development and leadership.

"I am an extraordinary leader; others are not. That is the difference that puts me there," he said, adding, "It is God's plan. You know, one man with God is the majority."

Addressing scepticism around opinion polls, many of which have previously failed to predict election outcomes, Owino defended the credibility of the latest survey, arguing that public dissatisfaction with the current administration explains the results.

"First, the poll was commissioned by a company with decades of experience. Also, Kenyans are largely disgruntled with the lack of proper service delivery, from schools, hospitals, infrastructure, and the cost of living. Why would anyone doubt it?" he said.

While declining to outline his political plans ahead of the 2027 elections, Owino hinted at an imminent announcement, saying he would soon make a landmark declaration following the poll.

The Infotrak Research & Consulting survey ranked Babu as the top perceived successor to Raila Odinga, with 33 per cent support.

He was followed by Acting ODM leader Senator Oburu Odinga at 10 per cent, ODM Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga at 7 per cent, and Siaya Governor James Orengo at 4 per cent.

The poll also placed Babu as the frontrunner in a hypothetical Nairobi gubernatorial race, ahead of incumbent Governor Johnson Sakaja and other potential contenders.

In the same survey, respondents were asked to name their preferred presidential candidate if elections were held today.

President William Ruto led with 28 per cent, followed by Owino at 7 per cent.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and former Justice Minister Martha Karua each received 5 per cent support.

The findings further showed that 37 per cent of respondents remain undecided on Raila Odinga's successor, highlighting a fluid and evolving political landscape within the opposition.

Analysts now say the results point to shifting support patterns, particularly among urban voters and younger demographics.

Babu, 38, first rose to national prominence as a student leader at the University of Nairobi, where he served as chairperson of the Students' Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU).

He was elected Embakasi East MP in 2017 and re-elected in 2022.

Known for his outspoken style, he has been vocal on issues including education reforms, the cost of living and youth empowerment, and has cultivated a strong following through social media and grassroots engagement.
