Moroccan football star Brahim Diaz has issued a heartfelt public apology following a missed penalty that proved decisive in Morocco’s 1–0 defeat to Senegal in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.

Taking to social media in the aftermath of the loss, Diaz shared a deeply emotional message with Moroccan fans, accepting full responsibility for the miss and expressing the personal pain of the defeat.

“My soul hurts. I dreamed of this title because of all the love you guys have given me, every message, every show of support that made me feel like I wasn't alone,” Diaz wrote. “I fought with everything I had, with my heart above all. I failed yesterday. I take full responsibility, and I sincerely apologise.”

The apology comes after a highly anticipated final staged before a packed and emotionally charged home crowd.

Expectations were sky-high as Morocco chased continental glory on home soil, with fans creating an electric atmosphere that reflected the significance of the occasion.

However, the match will instead go down as one of the most dramatic and controversial showpieces in AFCON history.

The contest was fiercely fought from the start, with both Morocco and Senegal refusing to give an inch.

As the clock ticked down in regulation time and the game remained deadlocked, Morocco was handed what appeared to be a golden opportunity to tilt the final in their favour when the referee awarded a penalty.

The stadium erupted as Diaz stepped up, carrying the hopes of a nation on his shoulders.

Amid deafening noise and immense pressure, Diaz struck his effort, but the Senegalese goalkeeper produced a crucial save that stunned the crowd and shifted the emotional balance of the match.

The miss sent shockwaves through the stadium and proved to be a turning point in a final already brimming with tension.

With neither side able to find a winner in normal time, the match headed into extra time.

Senegal, buoyed by the momentum swing, began to grow in confidence.

Their persistence paid off when Pape Gueye delivered the decisive blow, scoring the lone goal of the match to secure a 1–0 victory.

The strike sealed Senegal’s second AFCON title and silenced the home crowd, leaving Morocco devastated just steps away from lifting the trophy.

While Senegal celebrated continental triumph, Morocco were left to reflect on fine margins and missed chances, with Diaz’s penalty miss forever etched into the story of a heartbreaking night.
